Who would have ever thought that we would rely on the instincts of a groundhog to predict if we were to continue having a winter or see early spring? It sounds crazy, but every year on February 2nd we gather in front of our TVs and await the predicament of Punxsutawney Phil. Dating back to 1887, February 2nd has become known as Groundhog Day thanks to the idea of a local newspaper editor, Cylmer Freas in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Sure we can't fully rely on his predictions as he has only had a 40% success rate, but it is an interesting holiday and experience to look forward to! North Carolina sure has some interesting weather trends, especially in the last week. We have seen rain, wind, frigid temperatures and if you were lucky, some parts of our county saw snow! Regardless, whether you are a snow bird or dreaming of soaking in the sun on the beach, let’s hope that that groundhog gives us some glimpse of an early spring! Happy Groundhog Day!
